World Cup 2010!

World Cup fever has taken us by storm!...Well, me at least :p. Being a faithful and patriotic supporter of Scotland, I have been defeated and frustrated, like many other Scots, that we are not part of the World Cup...or have been for the last 12 years lol.

So, yet again, I am forced to stand behind another team, who I feel has the passion, drive and team spirit to dribble all the way to the final and embrace the
gleaming gold of that trophy.

Spain all the way!
In 2006, my chosen team was Italy, and had I bet money on it, I may even own blogger.com by now, or at least own my childhood dream car, the red Ferrari convertible.

I would put my savings behind Spain this year, if I had any to spare, but unfortunately the length of my gambling only stretches miserably to the 10p slot machine.

However, what I do have to support my team, is a hot summers day, my newly bought Spanish shirt, a bottle of Bud and my ex-football coaching father to watch the beautiful game with. To me it's all about the spirit, energy and teamwork that brings the sport alive and sets it on fire!

Regrettably, one thing that really bugs the hell outta me, is the phrase 'Simulation', which is a word most likely been invited in by the English when they didn't want to accuse their so called 'world class' players of god forbid, diving! There is no person in the world dumb enough to be blinded to cheats by this cover-up. It's completely pointless and we all know who you cheaters are!

It always brings a smile to my face when the commentators are about to say 'Simulation!', after a player has been magically tripped by an invisible
man and they fall wildly, feet tumbling overhead with a look of excrusiating agony and despair pouring into their face. They fall fatally to the ground as if they have been caught in the crossfire at BannockBurn. 'And Cole has been given a yellow card, for an act of...simulation!'. I let my head sink into my hands for a few seconds and by the time it has lifted and my eyes are fixed once again upon the lushious pitch...a miracle has occurred. I can see the 'simulation victim' leaping and tap dancing his way down left field, looking fit enough to star in footballs very first Riverdance.
Currently I am celebrating Spain's victory as they sail through into the knock-out stages of the tournament, thanks to quick thinking by David Villa. Unfortunately Fernando Torres looked
close to drained on Friday's match. Should I be worried?? I know I'm concerned about the two injuries that Gerard Piqué has picked up in the last couple of games. Getting sliced in the head
with football studs in the Switz game, and a mouthful of blood playing Honduras is not a good way to go. He's got more injuries in the space of two weeks than most players endure in two years!

Of course, I am mourning England's 4-1 defeat against Germany ... yea right, Go Germans!!!!

I'm also liking the look of Argentina. Lionel Messi is shining bright for me and I think his long desired winning goal is going to crown his uprising in this World Cup.

However the match between Argentina and Mexico tonight has concluded bitter-sweet for me. Prior to the match I had a 'Simon Cowell Moment' where I was involved in an inner battle of choosing between my heart, or my head lol. Argentina showed tremendous skill up front, leaving me routing for an unbeatable double act assault by Gonzalo Higuaín and Lionel Messi. My head was in there favour. However my sympathetic heart was beating for Mexico when they were wrongly held back by an early Argentine goal, that clearly should have been disallowed. The coaches, players and the entire world witnessed the replay, but nooooooo, rules are rules....bollocks! The passion driving them forward had me behind them in the second half of the match, hoping for a footballing duet with Giovani dos Santos and Javier Hernández. My heart went out for them, fighting long and hard for their place in the quarter finals. They have been great competition.

2010 is turning out to be the best year of sport for me and I'm loving it. With the World Cup and Wimbledon merging together, I find it difficult to leave my house if there's not a radio or shop television set upon BBC to accompany me on my journeys.

Summer's looking and feeling damn good!

Spain & Andy Murray
El apoyo a España en la copa del mundo 2010!
